ARGENTINA, THE SOFTBALL WORLD CHAMPION

Descripción

Most of them play in an amateur league, where love for the sport is stronger than receiving a salary for it. However, the professionalism of Argentina's softball team is not in question. Their recent world title in the Czech Republic helped them get the recognition of a system where soccer is the most popular sport. Now, they have the support of the States.

Argentina arrived at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games to claim the gold, by competing against nations with more softball tradition. For years, they have been on the podium of several continental competitions, but they hope to achieve a milestone for Argentine sport at the Villa María del Triunfo Sports Center.

Most of the Argentinian team members that arrived at Lima are from the Entre Ríos province, north of Buenos Aires. Many of them train for hours, in order to keep succeeding, but off the court they have a job like everyone else. Some of them, like Federico Eder, promote this sport at schools. Of course, ad honorem.

“It’s a disadvantage not to be an Olympic sport, but we haven’t given up on our goal and people still practice softball. This is the result of many years of work. Many of us play this sport since the age of 4 and come from the city of Paraná, in the province of Entre Ríos. That’s the capital of softball in Argentina. Softball is way more important there than soccer, and those who are not from the city live there too,” said Eder.

Meanwhile, Argentinian star Huemul Mata, the only player featured in a professional league, stressed the team’s perseverance. “As an amateur team, we’ve been through so many things, but we enjoy it despite all the struggles. Some of my colleagues have made sacrifices even greater than mine. Sometimes you travel only for the experience, but after the recognition we had for winning the World Cup, I feel satisfied with everything sport has given me,” said Mata.

SOFTBALL AT LIMA 2019

The Peruvian softball team will participate for the first time in the Pan American Games. After training in several Caribbean nations, Peru was able to place 6th in the Pan American ranking. Peru will make its debut against Cuba in the afternoon (16:00). Show them your support and buy your tickets at lima2019.pe/tickets.

Six teams will play in a round-robin preliminary round to move to the next stage. The sport is governed by the World Baseball and Softball Confederation (WBSC) regulations. The game consists of seven innings, where each team alternates batting and fielding. Finally, the team that scores the most runs wins.

LIMA 2019 SPORT CELEBRATION STARTS AT COSTA VERDE SAN MIGUEL

Descripción

The cold morning could not diminish the enthusiasm of the people that went to the two beach volleyball courts located in the Costa Verde San Miguel venue. Sports’ fans enjoyed every point of the first competitions which opened the 2019 Pan American Games sports calendar.

As soon as the best duos of the continent entered the courts at the Costa Verde, the people lived the energy of their good performance. The stands were gradually filled with color and a group wearing the Peruvian football jersey started the celebration before Peru’s matches.

Público voleibol

Then, a delegation of the Roque Sáenz Peña school joined in, and following the music and performance of the Sports Presentation team, celebrated the victories of the United States, Canada, Argentina and Costa Rica female duos. Each spike was effusively celebrated.

That very afternoon, in Sports Center 1 at VIDENA, the first day of handball competitions will take place, gathering the best athletes in the Americas.

Two days later, on July 26, the much-awaited Opening Ceremony of the Pan American Games will take place. Such is the relevance of these Games that 110 Olympic medalists will compete at Lima 2019. This proves that the Games will be a gathering for the best athletes in the Americas. Sixty-six of the athletes participating in the coming days have won gold. These outstanding athletes have won a combined total of 155 Olympic medals, including gold, silver, and bronze.

We will also have Argentinian judoka Paula Pareto, who won gold at Rio 2016 in the -48 kg event and bronze at Beijing 2008, and Argentinian basketball player Luis Scola, who won gold at Athens 2004 and bronze at Beijing 2008. We will also have the chance to see Mariana Pajón, Colombian BMX cyclist and two-time gold winner (London 2012 and Rio 2016).

ARGENTINIAN HOCKEY

Diego Elías, the eighth best squash players in the world, is in top form to pick up a gold medal at the VIDENA Volleyball CAR. Meanwhile, ‘Piccolo’ Clemente and nine other surfers will seek glory in Punta Rocas beach. Alessandro de Souza and Nicolás Pacheco will enthusiastically represent the Peruvian shooting team in Las Palmas shooting range.

You can also root for the women’s pair made up by Lisbeth Alca and Alexandra Mendoza, who want to earn a gold medal for Peru in the beach volleyball event. The Peruvian women's volleyball team needs support for the competition against the mighty Dominican Republic, Canada and USA teams, which will also go for the gold at Callao Sports Center.

The best female racquetball player ever will also be at the Callao Regional Sports Center. In addition, the best basketball, swimming, table tennis and karate stars will arrive in Lima to give their best performance in their respective events.

Tickets are still available for other disciplines such as Basque pelota, tennis, weightlifting and handball, with the historic derby Brazil vs. Argentina.

MEN’S SOFTBALL TEAM DREAMS OF MAKING IT FAR IN LIMA 2019

Descripción

Men’s softball will be one of the sports that makes its debut at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games. Because of the expectation surrounding this debut, the Peruvian men’s team, that came together for this edition of the Pan American Games, has been working hard to be in optimal conditions for the competition. They are currently training in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, until Monday, July 22.

Moreover, they have gained a lot of experience with the addition of two recently naturalized Peruvian citizens, Venezuelans Eyzer Mujica and Daniel José Ramírez.

“I thank Peru for welcoming me with open arms. I will fight for the Peruvian team at the Lima 2019 Games,” stated Daniel Ramírez, who feels like a Peruvian and plays as an outfielder on the team. He has been living in Peru for four years.

Before traveling to Santo Domingo, the team trained every day to get ready for this great challenge. They trained at the Lima 2019 softball venue, the Villa María del Triunfo Sports Center, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

As a team sport, cohesion and understanding between all players are essential. “We’re not only teammates, we’re a family. We get along well and that makes us strong,” pointed out Diego Riquelme, the pitcher of the Peruvian team.

The team shared their thoughts on their rivals: “They’re the top Pan American teams. Argentina recently beat Japan, became world champion and is coming to Lima to fight for the gold medal,” said Riquelme.

“I look forward to fighting for Peru and to put my heart and soul into it. I wish the stadium was ready. Seeing the stands packed will be exciting,” added the Peruvian softball player.

ABOUT THE LIMA 2019 COMPETITION

Softball will be contested in three rounds for seven days. The first stage will have a round-robin format and the top four teams will advance to the semifinals. In these matches, the team in first place will face the one placed second, and the third will play against the fourth.

The men’s team will make its debut against Cuba on July 25, at 16:00. It will also play against Mexico on July 27 and against Venezuela on July 28. Both matches will be at 16:00. The following day, they will play against the United States at the same time, and their last match will be against Argentina on July 30, at 18:00.

The winner of the first pool advances directly to the Grand Final. Meanwhile, the loser of the first pool faces the winner of the second pool in the final. The winner of this last match qualifies to the final round, the Grand Final, and competes against the winner of the first pool for the gold medal.

The competition will take place at the Villa María del Triunfo Sports Center. You can buy your tickets at www.lima2019.pe/tickets or at the authorized points of sale located throughout the city.

“Please make an effort to buy your tickets and go to see us so that you can enjoy the best sport in the world,” concluded Diego Riquelme.
