Lima, 12 November - Legacy is one of the most important aspects in the organization of mega-sports events and it even becomes the main motivation for hosting competitions like the Pan American and Parapan American Games. With that in mind, Lima 2019 formally sent a proposal to the Ministry of Education recommending the creation of a public entity to manage the legacy.

The initiative seeks to make infrastructure sustainable in time to serve elite competitions and the popularization of sports, but also to enhance the legacy in a comprehensive manner, promoting the possibility of socio-educational transformations and urban regeneration in order to generate a long term impact on sports, society and Lima.

The creation of this entity includes an efficient governance model to temporarily manage the legacy, four sports venues (VIDENA, Villa María del Triunfo, Villa El Salvador and Punta Rocas) and a non-sports precinct (the Pan American Village), as well as the supervision of five precincts, like the Las Palmas Shooting Range or the Army Equestrian Center, which will be managed by their owners.

The following items will be included as part of the transfer from the Special Project to the Legacy Entity: management plans prepared for the sports venues under its supervision; legacy management guidelines for the venues that will remain under their owners’ management but will be supervised and monitored by the entity; the Urban Master Plan to aid in the sustainable and planned urban development of the Pan American Village and its 45 hectares; and the transfer of knowledge website.

The proposed entity would have a department in charge of venue management, support and maintenance, as well as a department responsible for the Pan American Village and urban integration. Urban integration work will be very important, as the goal is to coordinate with the municipalities and other national government bodies in order to integrate the venues into the community and turn them into to hubs of social development.

PAN AMERICAN VILLAGE

In the case of the Pan American Village, which has 1096 apartments, an Urban Master Plan for the 45 hectares of the plot is underway to develop a new urban center in Lima Sur, focusing on education, innovation, sports and culture. In this regard, international experience shows that urban regeneration processes are one of the most sought-after and successful elements of legacy after events of the importance of the Pan American and Parapan American Games.

After having housed over 11 thousand people, between athletes, para athletes and officials (coaches, managers, assistants, physicians and administrative personnel), the Village is being conditioned for housing.

FORT LAUDERDALE - Panam Sports announced the first edition of the Panam Sports Awards and nominated forty outstanding athletes and coaches who stood out during the 2019 season and especially during the Lima 2019 Games.

Two of the nominees are Peruvian: surfer and gold-medal winner at only 17 years old, Daniella Rosas, and the coach of the Peruvian surf team, Gabriel Aramburú.

To vote for them, Panam Sports is launching an easily accessible webpage on their website: https://www.panamsports.org/vote/. Here, sports fans, National Olympic Committees, media outlets and even the athletes themselves can vote for those they believe stood out the most at Lima 2019.

ABOUT PANAM SPORTS

Panam Sports, the Pan American Sports Organization, are the owners of the Pan American Games and leaders of the Olympic movement in the American continent. They support and provide resources for the development of sports in their 41 member countries.

Panam Sports has successfully supervised 18 editions of the Pan American Games, which began in 1951 and take place every four years since then.

The Lima 2019 Pan American Games set various records. Lima 2019 set the record for the most participating athletes with over 6600, for the most Olympic stars with over 100 and for having 21 qualifying sports for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The Panam Sports Awards will take place on Friday, December 13, 2019, in Fort Lauderdale at 19:00.

Panam Sports received nominations for all the awards from NOCs, Americas Sports Confederations and members of the Panam Sports Executive Committee in order to compile the final list of candidates.

Within the framework of Gustavo San Martín being announced as the new president of the Peruvian Institute of Sport (IPD), the minister of Education, Flor Pablo, confirmed the creation of a Management Unit affiliated to the Ministry of Education that will be in charge of the legacy left by Lima 2019. The initial announcement had already been made by the president of the Council of Ministers during the presentation of the 2021 Government Plan. 

The minister pointed out that this unit would be assigned to her Ministry and the idea is that it will later be managed by the IPD, after it is reorganized under the leadership of Gustavo San Martín, who assumed the position after being in charge of the Sports Functional Area at Lima 2019.

The Special Project has sent a policy proposal for the creation of the Legacy Entity to the Ministry of Education. The proposal suggests a duration of six years and is based on the legacy planning that the PEJP has been carrying out.

The proposal to create an entity seeks not only to ensure that the infrastructure is maintained over time, but also to strengthen the legacy in a cross-sectional way, boosting socio-educational transformations and urban regeneration in the city and in society. The proposed Legacy Entity includes the management of the main sports precincts, as well as the implementation of an Urban Master Plan for the Pan American Village.

Carlos Neuhaus Tudela, president of the Lima 2019 Organizing Committee, received a new recognition and was named the “Peruvian Entrepreneur of the Year” during the World Entrepreneurship Week.

The ceremony was held at the Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola, who organized the event alongside the Peruvian British Chamber of Commerce. Here, Neuhaus was recognized for his amazing work as leader of the greatest Games in the history of the continent, which took place recently in Peru.

Neuhaus received the award from Raúl Diez Canseco, president of the president of the San Ignacio de Loyola Educational Corporation; Colin Gray, consul general of the British Embassy in Peru; Daniel Diez Canseco, vice president of Entrepreneurship of this university; and Enrique Anderson, president of the Peruvian British Chamber of Commerce.

This was the tenth edition of World Entrepreneurship Week, at which the main leaders were recognized, among who was Carlos Neuhaus, who received the main award of the night for his successful work as leader of the Lima 2019 Games.

“I am moved to receive this type of recognitions, because I feel like we made Peru proud. We ran a race filled with obstacles and we overcame everything for the athletes, who were our primary motivation. I have very nice memories of the more than 2 years and 10 months of intense work. This was possible thanks to the great work team that we had in the organization and the support of over 17 thousand volunteers at the Pan American and Parapan American Games. We held unforgettable ceremonies and our athletes beat historic records, winning 54 medals in both Games,” said a moved Carlos Neuhaus.

Meanwhile, Raúl Diez Canseco stated that Neuhaus’ recognition was well-deserved because he proved that in Peru things can be achieved. “Peru stood up for the Games. We were an organized country and without any problems during the days that our attention was on the competitions. Carlos Neuhaus is an entrepreneur and that is why he is being recognized,” assured Diez Canseco.

Lima 2019 Pan American Games medal winners Andrea Almarza and Sol Romaní, who won bronze in team Kata (karate), and Kevin Martínez, who won gold in Peruvian fronton, were also recognized during this ceremony as Sports Ambassadors.

In honor of their contribution to the successful recruitment and selection of the volunteers who became the heart of the Pan American and Parapan American Games, Lima 2019 held a recognition ceremony for strategic partners of the Volunteer Program.

The Lima 2019 Volunteer Program was a unique and unprecedented experience for Peru that managed to recruit over 100 thousand people from around the world who showed interest to be a part of the most successful Games in the history of the continent.

The ceremony took place at the Athletics Stadium and various schools and education institutions were a part of the process. Carlos Neuhaus, president of Lima 2019, was in charge of awarding and thanking the main universities, institutions and various organizations for their support in the recruitment and selection of Peruvian volunteers.

“We’re very thankful for your cooperation. The volunteers became the soul of the Games. It would have been difficult without them. We had over 100,000 people interested in the program. They helped us in different departments, always with a smile on their face. It was amazing, because they were always ready to help,” stated Carlos Neuhaus during the ceremony.

The head of the Volunteer Program, Ángela Morales, highlighted the support of institutions to achieve the success of the Games. “This was a national celebration because we were able to include actors from the entire country. We managed to be the most successful Volunteer Program in history. We left a social legacy because we trained volunteers that can add to any campaign,” she said.

STRATEGIC PARTNERS 

As part of the campaign to recruit volunteers, around 400 visits were made to municipalities, universities, institutes, schools, federations, public institutions and private companies from the main cities of Peru.

These organizations became strategic partners in recruiting thousands of volunteers. A total of 45 agreements were signed with the main universities and institutions at a national level, like the University of San Marcos, Peruvian University of Applied Sciences, Universidad César Vallejo, Universidad Tecnológica del Perú, Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola, among others.

All these institutions were recognized, as well as others like Universidad Alas Peruanas, Bausate y Mesa, Universidad del Callao, Nacional de Cañete, Autónoma, Universidad Federico Villarreal, José Faustino Sánchez Carrión de Huacho, Científica del Sur, Peruana Unión, Universidad Privada del Norte, Nacional de Cajamarca, UNIFÉ, Cordon Blue, Instituto San Ignacio de Loyola, Frida Holler, Cenfotur and INTECI.

SOCIAL LEGACY 

As part of the social legacy, a total of 28,089 people were trained. Approximately 51% of them were trained in the district of Lima. Of the total trainees, 61% were women. Of the total trainees, 13% were considered volunteer leaders. Additionally, 267 people with an impairment were trained in this process.

Training sessions were held in 15 locations around the country: Metropolitan Lima, Huacho, Cañete, Callao, Chiclayo, Trujillo, Cajamarca, Huancayo, Tacna, Arequipa, Cusco, Tarapoto, Ica, Paracas and Pisco, with the technical support of the United Nations. People aged 16 to 18 participated in this process.

A total of 1812 foreigners were interviewed to be volunteers. Among the foreign applicants interviewed, 34% were from Argentina, Colombia, Brazil and Mexico.

AT LIMA 2019

Lima 2019 stood out for their kindness, joy, proactivity and teamwork. They were recognized by Panam Sports, APC, athletes, Para athletes and the general public.

Pan American and Parapan American Games volunteers participated in the accreditation, departures and arrivals, transportation, medical and veterinary services, anti-doping, spectator services, press operations, protocol, award ceremonies, sports, technology, uniforms, workforce, venue management, Village services, accommodation, culture, ceremonies, committee services and language services departments.

For participating in the Lima 2019 Games, volunteers received uniforms, accreditation, food, transportation, accident insurance, a national and international network of contacts and special limited edition gifts, as well as the opportunity to live a unique experience.

PAN AMERICAN AND PARAPAN AMERICAN GAMES NUMBERS

11,311 volunteers participated in the Pan American Games; 114 of them had a type of impairment. 61% of volunteers were women. 

376 minors participated in the Games. There were 8669 people between the ages of 18 and 30, and 2266 were over 31. 

Most of the volunteers were from Lima: 9402; from outside the capital: 1395; and from abroad: 514.

A total of 5555 volunteers participated in the Parapan American; 4,846 were from Lima; 607 were from outside of Lima; 102 were from abroad. In addition, 79 people with an impairment were volunteers during the Games.

LEGACY CONTRIBUTION

Lima 2019 leaves a social legacy related to the volunteer service in the country and to the creation of a volunteer culture for current and new generations.

Sixty percent of first-time trainees ended up being volunteers.

Lima 2019 volunteers are part of a community that is well-informed, trained and has experience at a national level who are ready to continue serving their country.

The Lima 2019 volunteers became ambassadors of our culture and traditions, with a sense of citizenship and diversity, as well as a greater proximity to sports, to achieve development.

To make the most of the long weekend, sports fans have the chance to go to the various venues built by Lima 2019 to live an experience similar to what took place during the Pan American and Parapan American Games.

As of tomorrow, October 31, the National Peruvian Shooting Sports Federation will host the National Shooting and Para Shooting Championship that will take place until Sunday, October 3, at the Las Palmas Shooting Range in shotgun, rifle and pistol events.

This national championship is on the sports calendar for this year and will be held on a modern stage built and remodeled for Lima 2019. Among the main shooters participating in the competition are Marko Carrillo in pistol (bronze at Lima 2019), Alessandro De Souza in trap, Nicolás Pacheco in skeet (bronze at Lima 2019), Daniela Borda in skeet and Valentina Porcella in trap. Meanwhile, the Para shooters include Jorge Arcela (silver at the Lima 2019 Parapan American Games) and Steve Medina.

Finally, the following athletes will also be present: Naomi Bejarano and Daniel Chiok (traditional rifle), José Ullilen and Jazmín Alarcón (air pistol), Mariana Quintanilla (10 meter air pistol), Brianda Rivera (25 meter sport pistol), Fabio León (25 meter rapid fire pistol), Miguel Mejía (50 meters 3x40 rifle), among others.

The competition will begin at 09:00 on Thursday 31 until the evening of Sunday, November 3, when the award ceremony be held.

AQUATIC CENTER

Meanwhile, VIDENA’s Aquatic Center will host the first competition organized by the Swimming Federation after the Lima 2019 Games. The event, called II Division 1 Regional Tournament 2019 will be held this Friday and Saturday, starting at 09:00.

A total of 307 swimmers from 33 clubs of Lima and Tarapoto will take part in the competition. Many of them will have the chance to compete for the first time in a world-class stage like the won built for Lima 2019, which has now become the best legacy for Peruvian sports.

In addition, the National Table Tennis Championship in Sport Center 3 is being held until today, Thursday, and the National Bowling Championship is taking place at VIDENA’s Bowling Center until Sunday 3.

Finally, the U-16, U-14 and U-12 National Athletics Competition will be held at VIDENA’s Athletics Stadium from this Friday until Sunday.

VIDENA’s Athletics Stadium was packed with the excitement and joy of enthusiastic students once more, since they competed at this venue which was described as one of the best in the continent and was built for the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games.

Students belonging to the Public School Association of Cultural Associations (ADCA) participated in the traditional athletics competition for juniors and teenagers.

The students had the chance to compete on the official track of VIDENA’s Athletics Stadium for various 400- and 800-meter speed, hurdle and distance events, as well as high jump, long jump and throwing events. The National School Sports Games and the U-18 National Championship were previously held at this venue.

Students from the following schools had the chance to compete on a world-class stage: Peruano Norteamericano Abraham Lincoln, Peruano Alemán Alexander Von Humboldt, Colegio América del Callao, Colegio Italiano Antonio Raimondi, Colegio Augusto Weberbauer, Franco Peruano, Franklin Roosevelt, Colegio Hiram Bingham, Colegio La Unión, Markham College, Newton College, Colegio Pestalozzi, Colegio San Andrés and San Silvestre School.

In a moving and simple ceremony, the Pre-Olympic Table Tennis Tournament opened this morning with the presence of Carlos Neuhaus, the president of the Lima 2019 Organizing Committee.

This event took place in Sports Center 3 at the National Sports Village (VIDENA). This venue was built specially for the Pan American and Parapan American Games and will now welcome this tournament, which is the most important event to take place after Lima 2019 ended in September 1, as it is a qualifier for Tokyo 2020.

The president of the Latin American Table Tennis Union, Juan Vila; the secretary general of the Peruvian Olympic Committee, Carlos Manual Lazarte; and the president of the Peruvian Table Tennis Federation, Marisol Espiniera, were also present at the opening ceremony.

Neuhaus highlighted the legacy that Lima 2019 is leaving for athletes who are now competing on world-class stages. “It is very valuable that Peru has been chosen as the venue for this Pre-Olympic Tournament. Lima 2019 was a dream that seemed impossible, but we did it for the athletes. It was worth the effort, because the investment enabled us to have first-rate facilities. This is a chance to show what we have as a country and now our athletes can compete in quality venues,” said the president of Lima 2019.

Meanwhile, Juan Vila recalled the success of Lima 2019. “Carlos Neuhaus being here is important to us, because he was the captain of Lima 2019. This tournament will have a place in all of our hearts. It is the best organized activity in the Pan American Games It is a source of pride, so I congratulate the organization. All of this has led to you now hosting a qualifying tournament for Tokyo 2020,” stated the international executive. 

This is the first tournament of major importance after the Pan American and Parapan American Games ended, as it is a qualifier for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Top athletes in the continent like Hugo Calderano from Brazil and Adrian Díaz from Puerto Rico, who won the gold medal at the Pan American Games and qualified for Tokyo 2020, will participate in this international competition. 

Also participating in this tournament are Brazilian’s Vitor Ishiy, Pan American champion at Asuncion 2019, and Bruna Takahashi, singles bronze medal winner and doubles bronze medal winner alongside Jessica Yamada who, in turn, is a mixed doubles silver medal winner with Gustavo Tsuboi and team silver medal winner with Caroline Kumahara and Jessica Yamada at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games. Finally, the Chilean, Argentinian and Peruvian national teams will also take part.

The modern Sports Center 3, built specially for the Pan American and Parapan American Games competitions, bore witness to Brazil qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The sports stage, located in the National Sports Village (VIDENA), hosted the pre-Olympic table tennis tournament from Friday 25 to Sunday 27. The best men’s and women’s teams obtained a quota for the Olympic Games, which take place next year. Among these teams was Brazil, that took the title in the most important tournament to have taking place after the Lima 2019 Games.

The Brazilians won the title in women’s by defeating Puerto Rico 3-0 in the last round, while in men’s they beat Argentina 3-2 in the final.

The first team consisted of Jessica Yamada, Caroline Kumahara and Bruna Takahashi—ranked 53 in the world—, who beat Puerto Rico’s Adriana Díaz—number 27 in world ranking and gold medal winner at Lima 2019—, her sister Melanie Díaz and Daniely Ríos.

The men’s Brazilian team consisted of the current Lima 2019 champion, Hugo Calderano; number 6 in the world ranking, Vitor Ishiy; and Gustavo Tsuboi, who beat the Argentinian team, Pablo Tabachnik, Gastón Alto and Horacio Sifuentes, 3-2 in a tough and dramatic match that lasted more than three hours.

The men’s team triumphed over Peru (3-0) and Chile (3-0) in their first matches in the round-robin competition. The women’s team beat Chile and Peru, as well as Puerto Rico in the final.

This is the first major tournament to be held in Peru after the Pan American and Parapan American Games ended, as a qualifier for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Over one thousand people attended this international competition. It is worth nothing that Carlos Neuhaus, president of the Lima 2019 Organizing Committee, participated in the opening ceremony.

One of the main benefits that the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games left Peru is the legacy that will impact education, sports and society.

This subject was precisely the subject of a discussion group organized by the Sports Rights study center of the Universidad San Martín de Porres. Carlos Neuhaus, president of the Organizing Committee, was invited to give a presentation on the legacy that Lima 2019 is leaving the country.

in front of an audience filled with sports leaders, officials and university students, Neuhaus highlighted the world-class sports infrastructure that was built and remodeled for the continent’s most important multi-sports celebration.

He reiterated that the main motivation to organize the Pan American and Parapan American Games was the athletes, who now have can prepare and compete internationally in the best conditions.

The president of Lima 2019 pointed out that the social legacy is possible thanks to investing in sports, will help keep many young people away from vices.

He announced that Lima 2019’s urban legacy includes the Pan American Village expansion project, with more buildings, spaces to play sports and schools.

Likewise, he added that among other Lima 2019 legacies are the Volunteering Program, the purchase of goods through Compras MYPErú and the urban improvements executed thanks to the Games.

A CROSS-SECTIONAL LEGACY

Meanwhile, Natalia Rey de Castro, head of Lima 2019 Legacy, assured that the legacy is cross-sectional, enabling socio-educational, sporting and urban changes. Sports infrastructure, which is part of the Games’ legacy, will enable the popularization of sports and elite competition in the long term.

In this regard, she said that they have been working on a legacy governance proposal, as well as operational and management plans, that will deal with the issue of specialized management for sport stages which is necessary considering that the infrastructure is world-class.

Karin Sierralta, Lima 2019 consultant; Saúl Barrera and Óscar Fernández, former presidents of the Peruvian Institute of Sport; and, Jorge Canales, the president of the university, also participated in the discussion group. Additionally, among the main attendees were federation presidents like Jenny Martínez from gymnastics, Eduardo Tabbini from swimming, Gustavo Cárdenas from athletics, Gustavo Mattus from cycling and Juan Carlos Yuzuriha from bowling.
