Swimming is a timed sport that requires both endurance and speed, as it incorporates techniques from styles such as breaststroke, butterfly stroke, backstroke, freestyle and synchronized swimming, in specific 50, 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1500 m pools. Competitions can be individual or by teams, where the athlete or team aim for victory by touching a plate after their last round.
The Lima 2019 Games were the first Games to line up with the Olympic program, with both male and female team relay competitions and 36 medal events: 17 men's, 17 women's, and 2 mixed. The competition is carried out in eight lanes, with heats for all events except for 800 m and 1500 m freestyle and relay events.
The first two were carried out in heats with final times, with the fastes eight seeded swimmers competing in the evening final sessions. Relay events featured preliminary heats as well as finals. The US was the absolute favorite in this sport before Lima 2019, with 703 medals (323 of which are gold), followed by Canada and Brazil with 52 gold medals each. This sport was held at the new the Aquatic Center of the National Sports Village (Videna).

Records show signs of this sport from the Stone Age (7500 years ago) and also in more recent times in Egypt, Japan and Greece. At the beginning of the 19th century, swimming was established as a sport in Great Britain with the foundation of the National Swimming Society in 1837. It was part of the first modern Olympic Games in Athens 1896, in men’s category. Women’s category started in 1912. It has been part of all the Pan American Games since its first edition and is one of the most popular sports.
