Modern Pentlathlon
Its origin dates back to ancient Greece, where Pentathlon at the Olympic Games included race events, discus throw, long jump, javelin throw and pankration competitions. The winner was considered the most complete athlete.
Modern pentathlon includes five different events in one day of competition: Fencing (épée), swimming (200 m freestyle), equestrian (jumping), and Laser-run (four sets of shooting at five electronic targets with a laser pistol). Athletes accumulate scores based on their results.
The modern day version of this sport was invented by Pierre de Courbetin, founder of the modern Olympic Games. It combines fencing, swimming, equestrian sports, shooting and running. All five events must be carried out in a single day, and the scores of the first three events (fencing, swimming and equestrian) determine the order for the running and shooting competitions.
During the Lima 2019 Pan American Games, the modern pentathlon competition was held at the Escuela Militar de Chorrillos, as well as the Lima Convention Center for the fencing event.
