CARL LEWIS DELIVERS MEDAL TO 100 METER RACE WINNER AT LIMA 2019
Fellow American Michael Rodgers won the most exciting athletics event, held at the new Athletics Stadium in VIDENA. The ‘Son of the Wind’ praised the conditions of the new facility.
As soon as he was introduced, the entire Athletics Stadium burst into applause to celebrate his sports career. Carl Lewis, a worldwide sport legend nicknamed ‘Son of the Wind’, was the guest of honor on the second day of athletics competitions at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games.
Lewis, nine-time Olympic champion in athletics, eight-time world champion and gold medalist at the Indianapolis 1987 Pan American Games, came to Peru by invitation of Panam Sports. This afternoon, he was watching the different events held in the Athletics Stadium.
On this second day of athletics competitions, one of the events that grabbed the most attention was that the 100 meter race, athletics' main and most emotional event. The winner was Michael Rodgers from the US with a time of 10.09, followed by Brazilian Paulo André Camilo de Oliveira and Antiguan Cejhae Greene.
Lewis, who set a time of 9.86 in the 100 meters, awarded the gold medal to Michael Rodgers. In the medal ceremony he was joined by Panam Sports President Neven Ilic. Lewis also awarded the winners of the silver and bronze medals.
At the end of the ceremony, Lewis highlighted the infrastructure built by Peru, such as the Athletics Stadium. “I’m really having a great time. The Pan American Games are a nice tournament and it brings me memories, because it was my first international competition. The good thing about all this is that Peru now has facilities that are the best in the continent and that I haven’t seen in a long time," said one of the best athletes in history.
