Get inspired: meet an outstanding Peruvian football 7-a-side player
The Peruvian delegation has amazing and inspirational stories. Here is one that your probably did not know
Many of our Para athletes have become famous for their achievements, their medals or their stories. After all, representing Peru is not an easy task, but with our national team' drive and determination, nothing is impossible. This is the case of Julio José Luqui-Lagleyze.
These Parapan American Games have not only served to prove that we are world-class champions but has also brought to light people who are an example of life for all of us. Julio is one of them. Let’s meet him!
JULIO JOSÉ LUQUI-LAGLEYZE
Julio is a key player in our football 7-a-side team (which has made its international debut at these Parapan American Games, as it was formed last year). He, like the rest of the team members, was born with cerebral palsy. This has in no way prevented him from becoming an outstanding sportsman or developing professionally. Julio is currently Deputy Manager of the National Chamber of Tourism of Peru. A real pride for Peru!

“Football 7-a-side is a discipline for Para athletes[1] with cerebral palsy. I have it since birth, which has caused hemiparesis (decreased motor function or partial paralysis). I love this sport as much as any other Peruvian, and it is the only sport specific for people with this diagnosis”, said Julio.

Julio says that his disability has been with him all his life and has never stopped him from going for his dreams. He advices all parents of children with similar palsy or impairment not to worry. If they put their minds to it and they are taught that the only obstacle is the lack of will, they can become as big as they want.

“There are no limits. Although we have a diagnosis, we don't have a prognosis. We can become anything we want to be, because impairment does not mean inability. To all families of people with an impairment: let your children be, nothing prevents us from developing. If we fall six times, we get up seven. Everything is possible”.

Julio grew up in a conventional school. He attended school in Buenos Aires and then pursued a master's degree in Spain, as well as many courses both inside and outside the country. Today he represents us with the iconic "9" in the national team. Thanks for setting a great example for all of us Julio!
