This sport is an impressive display of agility, precision, grace, strength and flexibility. It is contested both individually and as a team. Men compete on floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and high bar, while women compete on floor, vault, uneven bars and balance beam. It is part of the Pan American sport program since the first edition in Buenos Aires 1951. Before Lima 2019, the US led the medal table with 120 gold medals, followed by Cuba with 70. This sport was held at Villa El Salvador Sports Center during Lima 2019.

Artistic gymnastics is the oldest of gymnastics disciplines. It became part of the Olympic Games sport program in 1896 and its origins can be traced back to ancient Greece.
