Two events took place at Lima 2019: Classic Bodybuilding (men) and Women’s fitness (women). Classic bodybuilding is a discipline for those athletes who do not want to develop their muscles to the fullest, but prefer a lighter physique.
Nowadays, there are five categories: 168 cm, 171 cm, 175 cm, 180 cm and over 180 cm. Special attention is paid to how the body looks, body proportions and lines, muscle shape and condition. Women fitness looks for elements of strength, flexibility movements, high tempo, technical perfection, elegance and grace.
Bodybuilders look for transformation and physical improvement by sculpting a body and seeking perfection over beauty.
A total of 32 athletes participated at Lima 2019. The competition was held at the Chorrillos Military School.
Lima 2019 was the first time bodybuilding was included in the sports program of the Pan American Games.

This sport dates back to ancient Greece and Rome, where athletes used to train lifting weights to fight in the Olympic Games or in the Roman Colosseum. Lima 2019 will be the first time bodybuilding is included in the sports program of the Pan American Games. The period from 1940 to 1970 is known as the Golden Age of bodybuilding, as it gained much popularity in Europe and the United States. New research in nutrition, dietary supplements and training were also developed.
