Lima 2019 is getting ready to welcome the best Para rugby players from all over the Americas during the sixth edition of the Parapan American Games.
Wheelchair rugby is a sport, where men and women play as a team inside a roofed enclosure, with basketball equipment and on a wooden surface. Originally, it was referred to as “murderball”. This sport was born in Canada in 1977 as an alternative for wheelchair basketball for players with limited upper limb mobility. The objective is to score more goals than the opposing team by carrying, dribbling or passing the ball toward the opponent’s end. To score a goal, the players must touch the goal line with two wheels while in possession of the ball. Since this is a contact sport, the friction between wheelchairs is not only allowed but is also an integral part of the game.
Wheelchair rugby players have a spinal cord injury, or an impairment that affects all or part of both lower and upper extremities.
“The Tumis,” name of the first Peruvian rugby team, have inspired the production of a film that chronicles the journey of these persevering athletes, who despite the obstacles have their minds set on a common dream: to succeed at the Lima 2019 Parapan Am Games.
Wheelchair rugby had its origins in 1977 in Canada when a group of quadriplegic athletes from Winnipeg (Manitoba) were looking for an alternative for wheelchair basketball that allowed the participation of players with reduced hand and arm function. The sport was coined as "murderball" or killer ball. Wheelchair rugby has been part of the Paralympic program since Sydney 2000.
Maul: When a ball carrier is held up by an opposing player and a player from his own team.
Ruck: Formed when two opposing players meet over a ball that is on the ground.
Scrum: A scrum is a way of re-starting the game. It is formed when forwards from both teams bind together and push against each other as they try to compete for the ball.
Try: When an attacking player is first to ground the ball in the opponent’s in-goal, a try is scored: five points.
Conversion goal: When a player scores a try, it gives the team the right to attempt to score a goal by taking a kick at the goal. This also applies to a penalty try. This kick is a conversion kick and can be a place kick or a drop kick: two points.
