Gymnastics is a sport where athletes execute a series of physical exercises combining strength, flexibility, agility and elegance, with or without apparatus depending on the discipline. This edition of the Games will include artistic, rhythmic and trampoline gymnastics.
A modern sports center located in the district of San Isidro will become the stage for the Lima 2019 competitions. Ariana Orrego Martínez is one of our most representative athletes and was the first Peruvian gymnast to qualify to an Olympic Game. Among the teams competing for the Lima 2019 medal standing, are Cuba, USA, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Venezuela, and Puerto Rico.
Gymnastics’ origins can be traced back to ancient Greece, where the early Greeks practiced jumping, running, and several methods of mounting and dismounting horses in preparation for war. The modern version of the sport evolved at the end of the 19th century: artistic gymnastics was part of the first Olympic Games in 1896.
All-around: Athletes compete as individuals on all four (women) or six (men) events.
Apparatus: Piece of equipment used by the gymnast.
Chalk: Used by gymnasts on their hands and feet to absorb sweat.
Element: A single move within a routine with a recognized way of performance and technical value.
